Creating a mathematics discourse community involves ensuring that the content standards as well as the 8 standards for mathematical practice are implemented. Participants will engage in a cognitively demanding task using 3-Read Protocol and Notice and Wonder. Based on this experience, connections will be made to content standards as well as the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Discussion will center around the language demands of the task. An emphasis will be placed on the importance of giving ALL students access to rigorous tasks. If we do not provide rigorous tasks for our students, then we are implementing an inequitable practice. The 3 Read Protocol is a Close Reading strategy used in mathematics.
